Blue Jelly Shrimp, a selectively bred variety of Neocaridina davidi, are a stunning and beginner-friendly freshwater shrimp known for their translucent, light blue coloration. 


 Blue Jelly Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi 'Blue Jelly')

  • Origin: Selectively bred from Blue Rili or Red Cherry Shrimp, originally from China and Taiwan 
  • Size: Up to 1 inch (females are larger than males) 
  • Coloration: Light blue, sometimes with a greenish tint depending on diet (e.g., spinach can cause a green hue) 
  • Temperament: Peaceful and social; ideal for community tanks with non-aggressive fish and other invertebrates 
  • Lifespan: Typically 1–2 years.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 5 gallons (10 gallons recommended for beginners) 
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 70–78°F (21–26°C)
    • pH: 6.5–8.0
    • GH: 6–10
    • KH: 2–6
    • TDS: 150–250
    • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
    • Nitrate: <20 ppm 
  • Substrate: Dark substrate enhances their color.
  • Décor: Live plants, leaf litter, and hiding spots like shrimp tubes or driftwood.
  • Filtration: Gentle sponge filter recommended.
  • Feeding: Omnivorous—biofilm, algae, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini), and spirulina

Breeding

  • Type: Freshwater breeders with direct development (no larval stage) 
  • Breeding Tips:
    • Keep a group of at least 10 for social comfort.
    • Females need extra protein and calcium during breeding
    • Breeding packs often include a male-to-female ratio optimized for colony growth.
